National Hunting and Fishing Day a Huge Success!

National Hunting and Fishing Day, held on Saturday, September 25 at the Cohen-Campbell Fisheries in Columbia was once again a great success.

The events of the day were designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for the young and old, both outdoor enthusiasts and urbanites alike.

Over 175 volunteers showed up for perfect weather in spite of Hurricane Jeanne, and 1530 visitors participated in a variety of activities while enjoying music from the Black Bottom Biscuits.

Continuous demonstrations included air rifle, shotgun and 22 rifle shooting, fly tying and fishing, wildlife artifacts, muzzle loading, care and preparation of fish and boating safety. There were introductions to fishing and map and compass use, and for the first time in National Hunting and Fishing Day history, kids were able to practice their climbing skills on a rock climbing wall.

Elvis the alligator made an appearance, along with a variety of snakes and insects including an African millipede and a tarantula. The Boy Scouts earned patches for their volunteer work, which was directing traffic this year. The Girl Scouts and Brownies were also present, as were members of a 4-H club.

We were so pleased with the attendance--nearly a 50% increase from last year! Thanks to the support of the Weatherby Foundation, the SC Low Country Chapter of Safari Club International and of course our volunteers and fellow conservation organizations, everyone had a great time.
