2006 Outstanding Service Award

The SCI Low Country Chapter's 2006 Outstanding Service Award was presented at the Fundraiser to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources 1st Sergeant Lynwood Kearse, III.  Lynwood and his wife were our honored guests at the Fundraiser.

Lynwood is the project manager for SCDNR's "Take One, Make One" program.  "Take One, Make One"  hosts events around the state that encourage youngsters to participate in outdoor activities.  The program also pairs volunteer adult mentors with individual youngsters for "one on one" outdoor adventures.

In addition to "Take One, Make One," Lynwood is also very active in supporting mobility impaired hunts around the state.  Last fall he helped us organize and conduct our Chapter's very successful 1st Annual Wheelchair Hunt at Nemours Plantation in the ACE Basin.

The Chapter looks forward to working with Lynwood on many more projects in the future and we are pleased to recognize him for his heartfelt dedication and tireless contributions to the young and mobility-impaired hunters of South Carolina!

Col. Hodges with USA Shooting Team Member, Lindsey Hollins, at our Annual Fundraiser on February 10, 2007

Lt. Col. Thomas Arthur Hodges, USMC (Retired) died on Monday, May 28, 2007 at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley after a lingering illness.

Lt. Col. Hodges was born on September 3, 1927 in Junction, Texas.  Lt. Col. Hodges began his career in the Marines as an enlisted man and, after graduating from Boot Camp at Parris Island, he served as a machine gunner in the 3rd Marine Division in the South Pacific during WW II and in China following the Japanese surrender. After being released from active duty in 1947, Lt. Col. Hodges attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where he eventually earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1960.

Once recalled to active duty in 1951, he was commissioned with the 5th Special Basic Course in Quantico, Virginia and joined A Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines in Korea.  He also  spent a year in Viet Nam with COMUSMACV working for Gen. William Westmorland.  Other assignments included Inspector-Instructor in Wichita Falls, Texas, Commanding Officer HQ Company and Fleet Marine Force Pacific Honor Guard in Hawaii, Commanding Officer in Charge of Leatherneck Magazine and as a Public Affairs Officer under the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.  He retired from his career of military service in 1972.

Lt. Col. Hodges worked for several years as a Public Affairs Officer for the National Rifle Association and as a land broker with the Atlantic Richfield Company.  He retired to Charleston in 1983 where he remained active in several organizations including the Navy League, Safari Club International, Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, and the Charleston County Board of Elections, among others.

Having earned his Eagle Scout badge as a young man he was a generous supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and other non-profit organizations.  He was an excellent cook and a lifelong hunter, fisherman, and conservationist.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Thomas T. and Esther (Winkle) Hodges, formerly of Junction, Texas, and his wife, Paula (Dawson) Hodges.  He is survived by a son, Thomas Taylor Hodges, and his wife, Dana, both of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a daughter, Marcia Moxey Hodges of Falls Church, Virginia, a sister, Betty Burcalow, of Sugarland, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 11, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the National Cemetery at Quantico.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lt. Col. Hodges’ memory to the Boy Scouts of America, Coastal Carolina Council, 1025 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407-3441, or the American Cancer Society, Charleston (SC) Office, 5900 Core Rd, Ste 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.
