154 B&C eight pt from Canada. Shot him the first day of the hunt. 1 1/2 hr in the stand, short hunt.

I took my first Canadian whitetail-hunting trip this past November. On the recommendation of a friend, I booked a hunt for myself and a friend with Barry Samsom of Safari River Outdoors. Barry hunts in the Meadow Lake area of Saskatchewan. Besides whitetail he also has hunts for spring and fall bear, and waterfowl.

I was very concerned about hunting in the extreme cold weather. Barry offers great advice on what to wear, as well as what not to wear in his newsletter and on his website (www.huntcanada.com). He also has information on flights, clearing Canadian customs, bringing firearms into Canada, motels, and auto rentals. Barry’s information and suggestions made the whole trip a lot easier.

We arrived at Barry’s camp on Sunday afternoon and the first order of business was to have all the hunters shoot their rifles at 100 and 200 yards. After sighting our rifles and a wonderful evening meal Barry had a brief orientation. Six hunters would be hunting out of the main lodge. There would be one guide for every two hunters. Barry was going to be our guide.

After a year and a half of careful planning I shot my deer 55 minutes after getting in the stand on the first morning. One of Barry’s comments during his orientation session was that each hunter should have already decided on what size deer he would hold out for. My deer was a beautiful eight point that grossed scored 154 B&C and weighed in around 300lbs. My friend shot a nice ten point the second day that grossed in the high 140’s.

My hunting experience with Safari River Outdoors was superb. Barry’s outfit was the most professional that I have ever hunted with. My only complaint is that I have to wait until 2007 to go back. Barry is already completely booked for 2005 and 2006. Needless to say he gets a lot of repeat customers.
