Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, September 2001

Chapter Members Mark and Holly Peterson booked their first African safari with Coenraad Vermaak during the 2001 SCI National Convention in Las Vegas.  They spent 3 weeks in South Africa, hunting 5 different concessions and visiting Cape Town and the wine country before returning home with a major case of Post Safari Depression!

Coenraad Vermaak Safaris has donated to the Chapter in the past.  We look forward to their continued support.  To learn more about South Africa's oldest established safari company, visit their website at www.cvsafaris.co.za

Lighthouse in front of our hotel on the Indian Ocean in Durban. We arrived in Durban on Sept. 11th and watched the attacks on the USA on CNN.

Common Reedbuck. We were hunting the Nottingham Roads area of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The white specks in the photo are snowflakes!

Cape Bushbuck shot at last light in sleet and snow. We only hunted one afternoon at Nottingham Roads in very unusual weather.

Impala ram shot at Fugitive's Drift Game Reserve in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Fugitive's Drift was our second hunting area. We were there for 3 days.

Young Zebra stallion from Fugitive's Drift. I wanted a Zebra shoulder mount. This young stallion had great markings, without scars or bite marks.

Nyala bull from Fugitive's Drift. Our tracker, Fixit, is behind me along with his brother, Dumisane, our skinner, and other guys from the property.

A great Kudu bull. Wide, long and deep curls; he measured 60 1/2". I used my .300 Jarrett with 200 gr. Nosler Partitions @ 3000 fps.

30" Blue Wildebeest shot at Fugitive's Drift with .375 H&H and 300 gr. Trophy Bonded Bearclaw bullets.

Our PH's, James (left) and Darren (right) with our videographer, Steve (standing). Enjoying a brandy and cigar after dinner at Fugitive's Drift.

My brother, Lee, Holly and me relaxing after a great day in Africa and a fine candlelit 4 course dinner.

Blesbok shot in the Willem Pretorious Game Reserve, our third hunting area.

Black Wildebeest from Willem Pretorious shot at 300 yards with my .375 H&H.

Red Hartebeest from Willem Pretorious.

Second Black Wildebeest taken at Willem Pretorious. 320 yards with the .300 Jarrett.

It was a busy morning in Willem Pretorious. Two Black Wildebeest and a Red Hartebeest taken before lunch.

Nice Grey Duiker ram. There were hundreds of these guys running around Willem Pretorious.

Springbok shot at 300+ yards in Willem Pretorious. Be prepared for long shots at spooky animals in high winds at Willem Pretorious.

Lake running through the middle of Willem Pretorious. This Reserve has a great variety of game in very large numbers.

Our tent in Pilanesberg. Lions roared outside the tent all night. Pilanesberg may be the only safari camp in Africa where all Big 5 can be hunted.

Old "blue bull" Cape Eland shot on our first day in Pilaneberg National Park, our 4th hunting area. Coenraad has exclusive hunting rights there.

Close-up of Cape Eland showing the thick, dark tuft on his forehead that is the mark of an old bull. Shot with the .375 H&H.

Nice Warthog boar shot in Pilanesberg.

Nasty, old boar baboon shot in Pilanesberg. I had no interest in shooting a baboon, until they wrecked our camp several times.

Second Cape Eland bull taken in Pilanesberg. This one was bigger than the first. His hindquarters were covered with lion claw scars!

Close-up of second Cape Eland. I had a shoulder mount done with him, and he is huge!

Black-backed Jackal from Pilanesberg. He was made into a head-in rug.

Holly and Craig, Manager at Pilanesberg. I proposed to Holly while we were there. Coenraad had South African champagne on hand for the celebration.

Our entourage of PH's, videographer, skinners, trackers and caterer at Pilanesberg. We traveled together for 15 days and enjoyed every minute.

Our cabin at Derksen's Private Reserve outside Vaalwater in the Limpopo Province. This was our 5th and last hunting area.

Situated on top of a rock kopje, the Derksen's camp was very picturesque. There was no power; water was gravity feed from tanks on the hill above.

36" cow Gemsbok taken on our first hunt at Derksen's. Shot at 150 yards with the .375 H&H.

Impala ram shot at a waterhole at Derksen's with the .375.

A very nice, old boar Warthog with heavy tusks. Derksen's was loaded with Warthogs, we saw dozens of them every day.

Lunchtime at Derksen's. James is joking with his tracker, Fixit. James and Darren were great fun around camp, and very serious hunters in the bush.

Holly and Lee relaxing on the patio after lunch. After a nap, we would have tea with the PH's, then head out for the afternoon hunt.

Kudu, Wildebeest, Warthog and Impala skulls at Derksen's. Each year, after the rains, they have local tribes repaint the camp in traditional designs.

Zebra mare shot at Derksen's with the .375. I wanted a zebra rug as well as a shoulder mount and this big mare made a good-looking rug for the wall.
