I made arrangements for my “Outback Safari” at the Jan,09 SCI convention. I met Graham Williams of Australian Buffalo Hunters there (www.biggameaustralia.com). He had a “show special” on an Asian Buffalo hunt and he put me with Vince Ashe for a free range Java Rusa deer hunt as well. I booked both hunts through Graham. The end of May off I went from my Augusta, Georgia home the 4 planes and 2 vehicles to Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve in the Northern Territory of Australia, some 30 hrs later. During the 5 days I was in camp I took 2 very nice Buffs, boar hog and did some fishing for Barramundi. This land is extremely vast with very little human activity. I am convinced that many of the Buffs I saw had never seen a man.The Asian Buff is quite large, a ton size with horns that have close or just over 50” of width. I used my Model 70 Winchester in 416 Rem. Cal. which worked quite well. But on the hog Graham was kind enough to allow me to use his pride and joy a 500/465 Holland & Holland double. The trophy pics speak for themselves as both Buffs are well into SCI records book. I saw more than one shootable bull every morning and evening in the bush. After Arnhem land I was off to Queensland to meet Vince. We drove to the Jimarndy Station where a strong population of Java Rusa were. This is a working cattle ranch with no high fence so the game is free range. I took an excellent Rusa that scored 162 3/8. This will be well in the top 20. He really is a “monster” as Vince noted. I saw 3 other shootable stags and this was not the rut as they were just coming out of velvet. We also fished here for Saratogas.I can’t say enough regarding my enjoyment of this hunt. Australia is a place I will go back to.Ernie Dorsey
