The 4th Annual Low Country Chapter Wheelchair & Wounded Warrior Deer Hunt!

Tuesday, October 28th & Wednesday October 29th, 2008

3rd Annual Wheelchair/Disabled Hunt group photo

Nemours Plantation will once again be the focal point for our 4th Annual Hunt Wheelchair & Wounded Warrior Deer Hunt.  At last year's 3rd Annual event we hosted 23 hunters.  The majority of them were wounded US Army veterans who are recovering from injuries sustained while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  In addition to the veterans, we hosted a number of deserving civilian disabled hunters.

Volunteers and hunters enjoy the chance to get acquainted and share hunting stories.

At this year's event we expect to host a total of 40 hunters.  In keeping with our desire to honor the ongoing sacrifices and service of our military forces, 20 of our hunters will be wounded Marine Corps veterans from the Wounded Warrior Battalion headquartered at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.  Young hunters facing life-threatening injuries or illnesses and adult disabled hunters will also be participating.

Hunter Chad Sloan killed TWO beautiful 8 point bucks during last year's hunt!

Through the generous support of private landowners, our hunters will have access to approximately 20 of the most magnificent, private plantations in the southeastern United States.  These plantations are managed to provide exceptional wildlife habitat and trophy quality whitetail deer.  Our hunters can expect to see a spectacular display of lowcountry wildlife and plenty of deer during their time in the field!

Ron Schmeits, NRA 1st Vice-President

We have confirmed that NRA 1st Vice-President, Mr. Ron Schmeits and NRA Secretary, Major Edward J. Land, USMC (retired) will attend this year's event!  The NRA has agreed to become one of our Co-Sponsors and has made a generous donation of $1,000.00 to our Disabled Hunter program!

Major Edward J. "Jim" Land

Secretary Land and 1st Vice-President Schmeits will address the group on Tuesday and share deer stands with some lucky hunters on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

NRA writer, Mark Ness will also be assisting a hunter in the field and will write an article about his experiences at the event for the NRA's "American Hunter" magazine.

The Honorable John Dalton, Secretary of the Navy during the Clinton administration, will attend the event on Tuesday to express his thanks to our wounded Marine veterans for their sacrifice and service.

Brigadier General James B. Laster, Commanding General of the Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot will be among the volunteers assisting our hunters in the field!

General Laster has authorized the participation of the Parris Island Marine Corps band and Color Guard!  We can look forward to a very special patriotic musical salute to our wounded Marine veterans.

Benelli Exhibition Shooter, Tim Bradley, will dazzle us once again with his spectacular shooting!

We are very pleased to announce that Benelli Exhibition Shooter, Tim Bradley, will be joining us once again this year.  Tim amazed everyone at last year's event with his showmanship and his tremendous skill with the full range of Benelli shotgun products.  You will not want to miss his performances at midday on both Tuesday and Wednesday!

Through the generous support of ThermaCell our hunters will be protected from the ever present and abundant blood-sucking lowcountry mosquitoes.   ThermaCell has supported our event each year with donations of  ThermaCell units and refills.  ThermaCells make it possible to sit quietly and enjoy the outdoors, free from the torment of swarms of buzzing, biting bugs!

Charles Allen, owner of Knives of Alaska and Diamond Blade Knives has generously donated 6 Cub Bear knives with Suregrip handles.  We will put all of our hunters' names in a hat and 6 lucky individuals will go home with a Knives of Alaska Cub Bear knife!

Speaking of knives, Superior Sharpening Services of Bluffton, SC will be on hand during the event to sharpen knives for our hunters, plantation owners and volunteers.  Hunting knives, fishing knives, kitchen knives - any dull knife will be professionally sharpened free of charge!

Professional photographer, Susan DeLoach, of La Bella Vita Images in Beaufort, SC has volunteered to attend the event on Tuesday.  Susan will set up an outdoor studio at Nemours Plantation and will be available to take any photos that our hunters desire.  Hunters with their trophy deer, Wounded Warriors with Major Land or General Laster, kids with Benelli Exhibition shooter, Tim Bradley, and of course, a terrific group photo.  Whatever image you would like to take to home as a souvenir of the event, Susan will take for you.

Chapter President-Elect, Pat Autore and his wife, Karen, will set up a computer and photo printer near the outdoor studio.  Pat will print 8" x 10" photos on the spot and place them in protective photo frames.  We want all of our  hunters, landowners, co-sponsors and distinguished guests to leave the event with a group photo and any other photos they would like to have taken.

The Low Country Chapter will have the largest trophy buck killed during the event shoulder mounted by Leslie Ramsey of  Wild Game Deer Processing and Taxidermy in nearby Sheldon, SC, free of charge to the lucky hunter!

Dewey Richardson of the Black Death Deer Scent company, www.op-dg.com ,will be attending the event again this year, and once again he will supply scent and scent dispensers for all of our hunters. This year’s hunt takes place during the dark of the moon and at the peak of the rut. Dewey’s Black Death Deer scent will definitely put some BIG BUCKS in our hunter’s crosshairs!

Nick Yeary, owner of the Kripple Kreek hunting stand company will have two of his stands at the event. His “Mann Stand” is an electric, hydraulic stand designed to accommodate a disabled hunter and a companion.  Go to www.kripplekreek.com for more information about Nick’s ingenious invention. Nick designed and built the stand so that his paralyzed stepson could once again pursue his love of deer hunting. Nick will demonstrate how quickly and easily the Mann Stand can be put in place, attached to a tree and elevated into hunting position.

We expect that there will be additional honored guests attending the event, including South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officials and a number of retired Marines from the Beaufort area and elsewhere.

The event will be videoed by professional videographer, Dave Lavery, of TimeLine Productions.  Dave has donated his services to assist Safari Club's Expedition Safaris TV show host, Mike Rogers, in capturing video for use on an upcoming episode of Expedition Safaris on the Outdoor Channel!

Each hunter will receive a "Goody Bag" of products generously donated by our Co-Sponsors. Safari Club International has supplied briefcases, nametag holders, ball caps, key rings, bumper stickers, decals and a cash donation to the event.

The NRA has provided each hunter with orange ball caps, pocket knives, .45/70 Commemorative Silver Bullets and Multi-tools and a cash donation to the event.

TexasHuntCo and Spec-Ops have donated Utility Bags and Recon Wraps for all of our hunters.

MapQuest maps & directions to Nemours Plantation from Charleston, SC

Coming from the south, Nemours Plantation is on the right side of Highway 17, several miles north of Gardens Corners outside of Beaufort, SC. Coming from the north the entrance is on the left of Highway 17 approximately ½ mile south of the Combahee River bridge. Look for the brick gates and the Nemours Plantation sign. Follow the road onto the plantation and bear left after passing through the second set of brick gates. Go down the avenue of live oaks and look for the event tents.

Finally, here’s some great news. Dirk de Bod is a Namibian Professional Hunter who won the 2008 SCI International PH of the Year Award. Dirk has donated a 14 day Namibian safari to our Safari Wish Program!

We will work with The Outdoor Dream Foundation to choose a youngster facing life-threatening illness or injury to participate in this adventure of a lifetime. There will be a small reserve amount payable to cover some of Dirk’s hard costs, but the safari will take place on his personal hunting concessions and all of the trophies will be free to the hunter.

Visit Dirk's website at: www.safarisnamibia.com to see photos of what our lucky Safari Wish hunter will experience!
