New Zealand Tahr Hunt

Lowcountry Safari Club member Jim Southard Jr. recently returned from a 3 day Tahr hunt near Mt. Peel in New Zealand. He purchased this hunt during the auction at the annual Safari Club banquet and was able to combine it with a previously arranged family vacation. As a convenience, the professional guide provided a rifle for the hunt and Southard chose a 30.06 for this spot and stalk hunt.

At 4000 feet and rugged terrain, Southard said it was tough hunting and training to get in shape before the hunt is highly recommended. He was able to take a nice mature Tahr at 120 yards on the first day. Packing it out posed a great deal of difficulty but was worth it.

The hunt package offered the chance to hunt Chamois and Red Stag as well as Tahr. Southard opted not to do so because of his vacation plans. He said the flight over was reasonably priced and not too strenuous. He highly recommended this hunt package and said that it was definitely worth going back.
