Montana Bison Hunt

In September, 2002, Chapter Members Mark and Holly Peterson went on a bison hunt on Ted Turner's Flying D ranch outside Bozeman, Montana.  It was actually a cull and not a hunt, but an interesting way to get a year's worth of excellent bison meat.

Bison herd grazing in an alfalfa field.

This is the large bull that I chose to shoot. For the sake of nostalgia, I used a Marlin 1895 lever action rifle in .45/70.

This bull weighed about 1800 pounds. We're having the robe tanned for a bedspread and the head done as a skull mount.

The bull was field dressed with the help of a winch-equipped, flatbed truck.

The bison were loaded into the pickup for the trip to a local meat processor.

Lyle Happel of Happel's Clean Cut Meats begins to work on my bull. We got 400 pounds of meat from this bull and it is wonderful.
